Outings for seniors in assisted living promote overall well-being by encouraging physical activity, social engagement and a sense of connection with society and their loved ones. These experiences also create meaningful and lasting memories for our seniors, enriching their quality of life.

While outings are beneficial, careful planning is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Proper preparation helps to minimise risks and address seniors’ physical, medical and mobility needs.

Set a Purpose for The Outings:

  • Social Connections - attending community events, family gatherings, etc
  • Leisure Activities - parks, cafes, places of interest, etc

Factors to Consider of the Senior:

  • Physical abilities
  • Cognitive status
  • Medical needs (if any)
  • Behavioural triggers, eg: agitation, anxiety in unfamiliar environments

Important note: do get a confirmation clearance from nursing/medical team if required.

Timing and Duration:

  • Best to go early after breakfast
  • Ensure duration of outing is not too long
  • Try to avoid mealtimes, medication times, or rest times
  • Build in rest breaks in between

Roles and Responsibilities of Caregivers:

  • Determine number of caregivers or volunteers that can assist
  • Roles communicated clearly to each caregiver or volunteer
  • Maintain line-of-sight of clients at all times (if cognitive impairment is present)

This infographic includes key consideration for planning safe outings, including selecting suitable destinations, accessibility, proximity and weather conditions, and preparing necessary medical equipment and transportation.
